Chad’s electoral commission rejects the candidacy of the leader of Idriss Déby’s former party

Chad’s electoral commission has rejected the candidacy for the legislative elections scheduled for the end of December of the general secretary of the Patriotic Salvation Movement (MPS), Mahamat Zen Bada, who supports the current president, Mahamat Idriss Déby.

The National Election Management Agency (ANGE) has communicated its decision to Zen Bada once its candidacy has been analyzed, that it would not meet the requirements set by the authorities, without the party having made a statement for now, according to the newspaper. ‘Journal du Chad’.

The main reason for the decision is the conviction handed down in 2012 against the politician for document falsification and money laundering. The legislation provides that, despite the fact that he benefited from a presidential pardon, he cannot compete in the elections, given that the decision does not mean that he was sentenced.

The MPS is the party of former president Idriss Déby, father of the current president. Déby died in April 2021 from wounds suffered in combat in the north of the African country as part of an offensive by the rebels of the Front for Alternation and Concord in Chad (FACT).

After his death, he was succeeded by his son, who headed a military junta until his victory in the presidential elections held in May 2024, in which he won more than 61 percent of the votes, culminating the transition process opened after the death of his father, who had led the country since 1990.
