The Chadian authorities announced on Wednesday the appointment of the leader of the opposition, Saleh Kebzabo, for the post of transitional prime minister.
The minister and secretary general of the country’s Presidency, Gali Ngothé Gatta, has announced that the military leader, Mahamat Idriss Déby, has appointed Kebzado as prime minister, according to the Alwihda Info portal.
Kebzabo, in his first statement after taking office, thanked the transitional president for his trust, and also recalled that the priority is to achieve free and democratic elections.
Also, the now prime minister, has stressed that the past must be left behind, while he has indicated that “major works are expected during the next two years of transition”, collects the aforementioned media.
“The will can move mountains,” he declared, before addressing his “thought to those who participated in the dialogue.”
Kebzado, 75, was a presidential candidate on several occasions, when he faced the father of the current president.
The day before, the transitional prime minister, Albert Pahimi Padacké, submitted his resignation to the leader of the junta, in order to pave the way for a new government of national unity.
His resignation came after Déby took office as interim president of the country and after the extension for a maximum period of two years of the transition opened in April 2021 after the death in combat of his father and until then president, Idriss Déby. .
The death of Déby — who had held power since 1990, after leading a coup that overthrew the dictator Hissène Habré — was a serious blow to the stability of the country and the region, due to the importance of the territory in the struggle against international terrorism in the Sahel and the Lake Chad basin.
