Chad detains eleven soldiers for a coup attempt in December

Jan. 5 (EUROPA PRESS) –

Chad’s government spokesman, Aziz Mahamat Saleh, reported Thursday that eleven Army soldiers, including the president of the Human Rights Organization, Baradine Berdei Targuio, have been arrested for an attempted coup in December.

Those involved in the coup, which was frustrated by the security services, have been placed at the disposal of the judicial authorities. Specifically, they face charges for altering the constitutional order, for criminal association, illegal possession of firearms and complicity, as reported by Alwihda.

“The judicial procedure is ongoing and the Government intends to clarify this matter and determine responsibilities,” said Mahamat Saleh, who also reported that the authorities had seized “transmission equipment” during the investigations.

This comes shortly after Idriss Youssouf Boy became chief of staff to the transitional president, Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno. His former secretary is implicated in a case of embezzlement of billions of CFA francs at the Chad Hydrocarbons Company.

Mahamat Déby’s mandate was consolidated for another two years in early October after “national dialogues” were boycotted by most members of the opposition, as well as two of the three main armed rebel groups and numerous civil society organizations.
