A few weeks ago it was confirmed that Lollipop Chain Saw will return and days ago it was revealed that it would be through a remake. This news filled many with joy, but some took this with a frown, believing that there could be some kind of censorship, but they gave a vote of confidence. Today we know more about the game and it was confirmed that it is prone to censorship.

Dragami Games, the company that owns the rights to the franchise and is responsible for the development, is aware of the concerns of the fans after the announcement of the remake and took the opportunity to clear up doubts about it. It was precisely the general director of the studio, Yoshimi Yasuda, who once again contacted fans through Twitter and shared an update on the project.

The new Lollipop Chain Saw it will be a remake with the aim of being a remaster

In the message he confessed that the return of Lollipop Chain Saw it was defined as a remake, but rather it has the soul of a remastering. According to the creative, the main goal is to make the game available on modern platforms so that fans can play it without problems. This is why a remaster would be ideal, but since 16 songs will have to be replaced for licensing reasons the game will be taken as a remake.

Thus, the remake will aim to be as faithful as possible to a remastering. In that sense, the remake will have an identical story to the original. Something that also worried fans is that the remake would look more realistic and lose the art direction of the original, as Yasuda confirmed that this will not be the case, but clarified that with “more realistic appearance” he meant that it would take advantage ” the advanced rendering technology found in today’s game consoles” to enhance that look, without changing the original aesthetic.

To make this even better, Yasuda promised that nothing of the original design of Juliet Starling (the protagonist) will be changed in the remake and that even assuming it was baseless: “It is us who created the model information of Juliet after a lot of of trial and error 10 years ago, and we feel attached to it more than anyone,” said the creative.

But… the remake of Lollipop Chain Saw could be censored

The above calmed the fans down a bit, as it is seen that Yasuda and Dragami Games want to be transparent about the project and their aspirations, seeking to preserve the essence of the original title… however, there is something that is not in their hands .

And it is precisely the issue of censorship. Unfortunately, the good wishes of the team are overshadowed when the decision to censor content falls on “the owners of the platforms” (Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo).

What does this mean? That no matter how much a studio wants to make a game with the content they want, Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo are ultimately the ones who decide if the content reaches the user in its entirety or if it needs to be modified or censored outright. Thus, a studio has 2 options: apply the regulations or simply not release the game on the platform in question.

In case you missed it: Neither Suda51 nor James Gunn are involved in the remake of Lollipop Chain Saw.

Yasuda addressed the doubts about censorship in the final part and sincerely mentioned that he cannot talk much about it because it has not been discussed with the console brands, but he assured that “they will try to negotiate with the owners of the platforms so that the game can be as close as possible to the original version.

It was precisely this point that attracted the most attention and fans were quick to highlight it. Given this, many players on social networks raised their voices and mentioned various alternatives, such as launching the game with as little censorship as possible depending on the platforms. Thus, there would be versions for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation consoles and Xbox consoles. According to some, Nintendo would be more lax compared to PlayStation, which in recent years has been very picky about erotic or sexual content. Others recommended the release on PC, which would be the least restrictive.
