The Turkish Foreign Minister, Mevlut Cavusoglu, reported this Friday that he will travel to Moscow on May 10 to meet with his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, and participate in the quadripartite talks on the process of normalization of relations between Ankara and Damascus.
“We have received official confirmation from Moscow. On May 10 we will leave for Moscow. In the morning I will have the opportunity to meet with Lavrov and then we will participate in the ministerial meeting (four parties: Iran, Syria, Turkey and Russia),” he reported. Cavusoglu in statements to channel 24 TV collected by the TASS news agency.
The defense ministers of Russia, Turkey, Iran and Syria held a meeting last week in Moscow to address the situation in the Arab country, amid a regional push for the reintegration of Damascus after more than a decade of almost total isolation by the war that broke out in 2011.
Earlier in January, Turkey, Iran and Syria exchanged views on Iran’s participation in these meetings, so the leaders of the four countries will meet in Moscow again on Wednesday to push forward efforts to normalize relations. between Ankara and Damascus.
Iran is, along with Russia, the main ally of Syrian President Bashar al Assad in the armed conflict, although Tehran had previously indicated that it would only help the country through military advisers and not through military equipment.
For its part, Russia is one of the main international supporters of Al Assad, and its military intervention in 2015 allowed government forces to repel rebel advances and once again take the initiative on the battlefield.
