Catholics for the Right to Decide and their campaign for a free and safe abortion

First modification:

This September 28, the Global Day of Action for a Legal, Safe and Free Abortion was celebrated. Within the framework of this date, the Network of Catholics for the Right to Decide in Latin America and the Caribbean launched the campaign ‘Woman, your will be done’, whose purpose is to defend and claim freedom of conscience. In this edition of Ellas Hoy we address this issue with the help of Griselda Mata Linares and Paula Estenssoro, co-coordinators of the Network of Catholics for the Right to Decide.

The campaign of the Network of Catholics for the Right to Decide is based on data collected by the Regional Survey on Sexuality, Abortion and Religion carried out by Ipsos in 2021 in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico and Peru.

According to the results, 81% of believers surveyed believe that, by law, abortion should be allowed in all or some cases, 70.3% affirm that a woman who aborts can continue to be a good believer and 81% consider that if a woman she needs to have an abortion because her life is in danger and the doctor who treats her is a believer, he must perform the procedure.

Among other data, 78% of the people surveyed agree that a woman should abort in case of rape; 66% when the woman’s life is in danger; 85% when the woman’s health is in danger and 66% when the fetus suffers from congenital diseases.
