18 Apr. (EUROPE PRESS) –
The bear responsible for the death of the mountain runner Andrea Papi, who was attacked in the Trentino area, in the northern part of the country, has been captured this Monday night, waiting for the political and judicial authorities to determine if she is finally euthanized.
Papi, 26, was hit by an animal while running on mountain trails and genetic analysis ended up identifying the bear Jj4 as responsible. The Government of Trento ordered the capture and death of the animal, but the Regional Administrative Court of Lazio paralyzed the sacrifice last week.
It did leave open the possibility of capture, which has been carried out using a cage system. The president of the autonomous province of Trento, Maurizio Fugatti, has expressed his “satisfaction” at a press conference, although at the same time he has acknowledged “bitterness” for not having prevented the attack, according to the AdnKronos agency.
In this sense, he has stated that there is an “excess” of 70 bears in the area and has warned of the risk that this entails for the population. For this reason, he has confirmed that, if the court gives the green light to the sacrifice, the authorities will proceed immediately.
