The launch of the Miura 1, the first rocket fully developed in Spain, has been canceled minutes before takeoff by high winds in the vertical of the base of El Arenosillo, Huelva.

“We canceled the first launch attempt of Miura 1 due to high winds between 8 and 12 kilometers, higher than those recommended for safety”, reported PLD Space, the private company that made the rocket. Takeoff had been scheduled for 08:30 (06:30 UTC).

In a subsequent statement, the company specified that the mission “postponed due to weather issues”. The last wind measurement balloon launched showed wind gusts of more than 30 meters per second, exceeding the established limit, added. Both the launch pad and the rocket are in perfect condition and pA new release date will be announced soon.

The company had several launch windows for this month of May, but they ended precisely this Wednesday. For this reason, the company attempted the launch on May 21, but it had to be aborted also due to weather conditions.

At 12.5 meters tall, the Miura 1 rocket is a liquid-fueled rocket that is designed to lift 100-kilo payloads 150 kilometers high, with a 12-minute flight in which 3 minutes of microgravity are achieved to carry out experiments. The return of the launcher occurs with a parachute into the sea, where it is safely recovered with the payload.

Miura 1 is a technological demonstrator for PLD Space’s goal of launching a much larger orbital rocket, Miura 5, in 2024, which will place Spain between the small number of countries with the capacity to successfully send small satellites into space.

The Miura 1 was developed at the PLD Space facilities in Elchethe first tests were carried out in Teruel, but since March it has been transferred to the Cedea facilities in El Arenosillo, where flight control will be carried out, since the takeoff will take place from Médano del Loro.
