() – Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Wednesday on his Instagram account who will separate from his wife, Sophie.

After “many meaningful and difficult conversations” with Sophie, “we have made the decision to part ways,” Trudeau said.

“As always, we remain a united family with deep love and respect for each other and all that we have built and will continue to build,” she wrote.

She asked that her privacy be respected for the well-being of her children.

According to Trudeau’s official biography, he and Sophie married in 2005 and have three children.

After spending several years teaching in Vancouver, Trudeau returned to Montreal in 2002 where he met Sophie Grégoire, according to the Canadian prime minister’s official biography.

“In 2002, Justin returned home to Montreal, where he met Sophie Grégoire. They married in 2005 and are now the proud parents of Xavier, Ella-Grace and Hadrien,” the biography says.

According to the website A member of Trudeau’s Liberal Party, Grégoire Trudeau earned a bachelor’s degree in communications from the University of Montreal, then worked in sales and advertising before becoming a radio and television reporter.

In an Instagram post celebrating their wedding anniversary last year, Grégoire Trudeau said the couple had “navigated through sunny days, raging storms and everything in between and it’s not over.”

“Long-term relationships are challenging in many ways. They demand constant work, flexibility, commitment, sacrifice, devotion, patience, effort and much more. None of us are perfect and therefore there is no such thing as a perfect relationship, but love is only true when it keeps you safe, frees you and makes you grow,” she added.

The couple attended King Charles’ coronation in London in early May and also met US President Joe Biden in March.
