Canada orders new investigation into alleged foreign interference in elections

March 7 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The president of Canada, Justin Trudeau, has ordered this Monday to investigate again the alleged foreign interference in the elections, announcing measures such as the appointment of an independent special rapporteur.

“As a Government, it is our job to protect our institutions and all who call Canada home. Today we are taking even more steps to protect our democratic institutions, uphold their integrity, and maintain and strengthen confidence in our democracy. We will always take this very seriously foreign attempts to undermine our democracy,” he said.

Trudeau has indicated that this position will make expert recommendations on the protection and strengthening of democracy in the country, in order to identify the gaps that “may remain in the surveillance and protection” of the democratic system.

“Any attack, or attempted attack, on our democracy is unacceptable. So make no mistake: when it comes to defending our national security, we will always stand firm, and continue to strengthen our institutions and defend their integrity,” the president said. .

The Government of Canada has stressed that “maintaining and strengthening” democracy “requires constant work”, which “transcends any politician and any government because the institutions we establish must outlive any of us”.

The Canadian president accused the Chinese government in November of “aggressively interfering” in Canada’s electoral processes through “games” and given the possibility that Beijing has Ottawa as the target of this type of interference.
