The Government of Canada has announced this Wednesday a package of sanctions against Iran, the eleventh since October 2022, for its “continuous violations” of Human Rights, directed on this occasion at nine people and one entity.
Among the nine people designated by the Canadian government are members of the so-called Morality Police, which is blamed for the death of the young Mahsa Amini, arrested for allegedly wearing the veil incorrectly, which triggered a wave of protests throughout the country.
The people sanctioned include a deputy commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, for the repression of protests in the province of Sistan and Balochistan that left dozens of deaths, and the board of directors of Paravar Pars, a “key producer” of drones that would be being used in the “unjustifiable” Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Finally, they have also included in this new battery of sanctions the Rajaei Shahr prison, located on the outskirts of the city of Karaj, in northern Iran, and which would come to exemplify “the brutality of the regime” since among its walls, “a record number of state executions” have been committed.
“Canada’s commitment to human rights is unwavering and we will always give a voice to those who need our support, including the women, men and children of Iran,” said Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly.
“We will continue to do everything in our power to respond to the destabilizing actions of the Iranian regime, which affect not only the Iranian people, but have implications for world peace and security,” he added.
The sanctions join similar measures already announced by the European Union, the United Kingdom and the United States. With them, the assets of those indicated that they may have in any of these countries are frozen, while commercial dealings, or of any kind, with these people and entities are prohibited.
