Canada includes Yemen’s Houthi rebels on its list of terrorist entities

The Minister of Public Security of Canada, Dominique LeBlanc, has included this Monday in his list of terrorist groups the Ansaralah movement, known as the Houthi rebels, which controls the capital of Yemen, Sanaa, and other areas in the north and west of the country. since 2015.

“Today’s inclusion of Ansaralá on the list of terrorist entities contributes to our efforts to combat terrorism globally and align Canada’s actions with those of our allies. Acts of violent extremism and terrorism have no place in the world. We will continue taking measures to stop the expansion of these activities internationally and to counter threats to Canada, its citizens and its interests around the world,” the minister said in a statement.

With the addition of the Yemeni group, there are 79 terrorist entities listed in the Canadian Criminal Code, which prohibits “the financing, movement and recruitment of terrorists.” Thus, the measure allows Canadian banks to freeze all assets that these organizations have in the country, prohibits the entry into Canada of affiliated persons and authorizes the Police to accuse any person who supports them financially or materially.

Canadian authorities have highlighted that the movement has “contributed to unrest” in the Middle East, attacking ships off the coast of Yemen in support of Palestinian militias, the target of the Israeli retaliatory military offensive launched after the October 7 attacks. .

Likewise, the group has attacked other American and British strategic assets in response to the bombings of these countries against the country in an intervention that Washington and London base on their desire to guarantee the safety of navigation in the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean.
