Canada on Monday imposed new sanctions against 34 individuals and one entity involved in the dissemination of Russian disinformation and propaganda, as well as “false narratives” that serve as a pretext for the “unjustified” war of the “Russian regime” against Ukraine.
“The Russian regime’s war depends on lies and deceit. It gags and imprisons its own citizens who dare to speak the truth. As the number of human rights abuses by Russia increases, Canada is taking steps to counter the propaganda that tries to excuse them,” Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly explained in a statement.
The measure, which was announced during a visit to the capital, Ottawa, by human rights activists Bill Browder and Evgenia Kara Murza, the wife of arrested Russian opposition leader Vladimir Kara Murza, seeks to weaken the Russian propaganda system.
“For years, the Kremlin has been trying to undermine the territorial integrity of Ukraine through the state media and its proxies, which parrot the ahistorical facts and false claims of (Russian) President Putin,” he explained. Canadian Foreign Ministry.
In this sense, Ottawa has stressed that Moscow tries to “hide the truth” by restricting the media, as well as stifling “legitimate” political dissent, with the arrest of people like Kara Murza, who “have the courage to speak out against internal repression and Putin’s military aggression abroad.
Canada will continue to work with like-minded partners to impose further sanctions in response to Russia’s human rights violations and continued aggression against Ukraine.
