The authorities of Cameroon have denied this Tuesday rumors about the state of health of the country’s president, Paul Biya, 91, after he has been absent from several events to which he was invited in recent weeks, which has been cause for speculation.

“Recently, some malicious individuals have spread rumors about the alleged poor health and eventual death of the president through their social networks. The civilian cabinet of the Presidency reassures Cameroonians and the international community about his excellent state of health” , indicated the director of the cabinet, Samuel Mwondo Ayolo, through a statement.

In this sense, he explained that the head of state “continues to perform his duties in (the Swiss city of) Geneva”, since “he has not left the city since his visit to Beijing”, at the beginning of September on the occasion of the summit. of the China-Africa Cooperation Forum, at which time he met with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping.

“The civil cabinet strongly condemns acts that attack freedom of expression with the sole objective of deceiving local and international public opinion,” added Mwondo Ayolo.

The Government has also spoken out, through its spokesperson, René Emmanuel Sadi, who has regretted that “for several days rumors of all kinds have been circulating” through the media and social networks about Biya’s condition, and has declared “unequivocally that these rumors are fantasy and pure imagination of their authors.”

“Television networks, in search of a certain recognition within public opinion, echo this with peremptory advertisements, accompanied by comments all as biased as the others, but without any connection with reality,” he maintained, according to reads a statement from the Cameroonian Ministry of Communication published on its profile on the social network X.

According to Sadi, the president “granted himself a brief private stay in Europe” after his stay in Beijing. “He remains, as usual and wherever he is, attentive to the evolution of national life,” he assured. However, he added that “he is fine and will return to Cameroon in the coming days.”

In this context, the spokesperson has asked citizens and allies “not to allow themselves to be distracted by maneuvers of disinformation, instrumentalization and destabilization orchestrated by small groups and pernicious individuals, for unrecognized purposes.”

Biya’s health has been called into question following his absence from both the UN General Assembly, where he was scheduled to speak, and the Francophonie summit. His last official appearance was more than a month ago, in early September, at the China-Africa summit.
