The use of medicinal cannabis has been increasing globally due to the growing scientific evidence supporting the effectiveness of this plant in the treatment of various diseases and ailments.

In countries like Colombia, there are more than 762,000 people who consume cannabis for therapeutic purposes, according to figures from the Ministry of Health and Social Protection, Because 47% of Colombians suffer from pain at least once a month, according to studies by the scientific outreach program of the Universidad del Rosario. In addition, it is estimated that this industry will generate profits of more than US$23.5 million in the country by 2025, according to estimates by New Frontier Data.
That is why the first International Congress of Medicinal Cannabis and Pharmacy Management will be held in the capital of Valle del Cauca on August 15 and 16. This event, organized by Carmen’s Medicinals and the University of Santiago de Cali, seeks to educate and train health professionals on topics related to medicinal cannabis and pharmacy management, the use of this plant in human and veterinary health, and the implementation of artificial intelligence in these disciplines.

More than 1,000 people are expected to attend the two-day conference, where they will be able to learn first-hand updated, evidence-based information on the use of medicinal cannabis to treat various conditions in humans and animals. In addition, the conference aims to train pharmacists and pharmacy technicians on best practices in dispensing medications, including the use of sign language to improve communication with patients with hearing disabilities.
Juan Romero, CEO of Carmen’s Medicinals, points out that among the topics to be discussed are the therapeutic approaches to medicinal cannabis in pathologies as important as pain, uses and applications in dental practice, multimodal pain management with medicinal cannabis in wildlife under professional care and domestic animals, access mechanisms and technical requirements for cannabis-based medicines for human and veterinary use, and clinical practice with cannabinoids, including formulation, dosage and titration, among other topics.
“Our aim with this congress is to provide a platform for learning and collaboration for healthcare professionals, researchers, regulators and others interested in the field of medicinal cannabis. We want to encourage the exchange of knowledge and experiences, presenting the latest research and best practices in the therapeutic use of cannabis, both in human and veterinary health.”Romero points out.

This event will be attended by important government entities such as the Cali Health Department and the Valle del Cauca Governorate. It also has the support of organizations and entities such as Genfar, the University of La Plata in Argentina, the National Narcotics Fund, among other renowned institutions.
The congress will also feature the participation of various national and international speakers from countries such as Argentina, Brazil and Peru, who will address a wide range of topics around the application and benefits of this plant in various branches of human and animal medicine. This is key today in light of the rapid growth of the medicinal cannabis industry, since according to data from Statista Research, it is projected that during 2024 the medicinal cannabis market will exceed US$1.15 billion in Latin America.
This event promises to be a learning and networking platform for all attendees, encouraging the exchange of knowledge and experiences in the field of medicinal cannabis and pharmacy management.
