( Spanish) –– For the first time, Colombia will host the Conference of the Parties on Climate Change (COP16), a global event that, according to the UN, will position Cali at the center of discussions about the future of the planet.

From October 21 to November 1, delegations from 190 countries – including those of 14 heads of state – will meet in the capital of Valle del Cauca, which has been selected by the UN for its strategic location in one of the most biodiversity in the world, according to the organizers themselves.

Cali Mayor Alejandro Eder said last week that the host city is surrounded by the majestic Farallones, is close to the biogeographical Chocó and will show the world its commitment to protecting nature, according to a mayoral bulletin.

The organization of the event hopes that, at the summit, multiple technical meetings will be held to prepare the final documents to be presented, with a view to achieving significant progress in the fight against climate change.

According to the UN, these agreements will be key for the COP29 in Azerbaijan, where it is expected to consolidate stronger global initiatives. In addition, in the heart of the city a space dedicated to showing Colombia’s commitment to the protection of the environment and biodiversity will be set up.

For her part, the Minister of Environment and Sustainability of Colombia, María Susana Muhamad González, says that she hopes that this space will not only highlight the achievements of entrepreneurs and companies that are already working on sustainable projects, but also that this space will become in a center of awareness about the importance of sustainability for the future of the planet.

The ministry maintains that COP16 will not just be a discussion forum; It will be a catalyst for concrete actions. Colombia has in its hands the opportunity to lead the transition towards a more sustainable future, and the efforts that are already being implemented are proof that change is possible. This summit—according to the authorities—will mark a before and after in the environmental policies of the country and the world.
