Burmese opposition condemns Ban Ki Moon’s meeting with the military junta

26 Apr. (EUROPE PRESS) –

The Government of National Unity of Burma, loyal to the former ‘de facto leader’, Aung San Suu Kyi, has condemned this Wednesday the meeting of former United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki Moon with the leaders of the military junta that governs the country since the February 2021 coup.

Thus, the opposition to the junta has criticized the meeting and has described it as “unethical”, in addition to an attempt to “support a thug on the international stage”, according to the Irrawaddy news portal.

The president of the Unity Government, Duwa Lashi La, has indicated that the decision is “incorrect” after Ban held a meeting with the head of the military junta, General Min Aung Hlaing, in Naypyidaw, the Burmese capital.

“Although I consider that an approach by the international community is positive, I will condemn any idea that does not bring about the end of the dictatorship,” he pointed out.

Ban has justified the meeting by qualifying that it is an attempt to find a “path to put an end to the violence” in the Asian country, which has been plunged into chaos since the military coup.

In this sense, he has highlighted the importance of all parties participating and playing a “fundamental role” when it comes to “guaranteeing a lasting solution to the crisis”, something that would include the Unity Government, which is considered by the board to be a terrorist organization.

The former head of the UN visited Burma this week at the invitation of the junta and has insisted on the need to apply the consensus plan proposed by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and which involves advancing towards a unity government.
