The Government of Burkina Faso has announced the release of a Polish citizen kidnapped at the end of April in the province of Gourma, located in the east of the country, without Warsaw having commented on what happened so far.
The Burkina Faso Minister of Communication, Valérie Kaboré, has detailed that the man, identified as Dernadky Rafal Camille, was released on June 24 and transferred days later to the capital, Ouagadougou.
Kaboré has highlighted that the man was transferred by Gendarmerie agents and handed over to the Polish authorities on Tuesday after undergoing medical tests. At the moment it is unknown who was behind the kidnapping.
On the other hand, on Wednesday three ‘volunteers’ recruited by the authorities to reinforce the anti-terrorist fight died in an attack in Tin-Akoff, in the Sahel region (north), according to the Burkina Faso news portal Infowakat.
Burkina Faso, led by a military junta since the aforementioned coup, has generally experienced a significant increase in insecurity since 2015, which has caused a wave of internally displaced persons and refugees to other countries in the region.
The attacks, the work of both the affiliate of Al Qaeda and that of the Islamic State in the region, have also contributed to increasing inter-community violence and have caused self-defense groups to flourish, to which the Burkinabe government has added ‘volunteers ‘ to help in the fight against terrorism.
