The Armed Forces of Burkina Faso announced on Tuesday the death of 15 suspected terrorists in an operation carried out in response to an attack carried out on Monday against a detachment in Kelbo (north) that resulted in the death of two soldiers.
The Army has indicated in a statement that the “counteroffensive” was launched after the “vigorous response” to the attack and has detailed that “air support was deployed to intercept the group of assailants who were trying to flee.”
“This action, coordinated with ground units, made it possible to inflict a heavy defeat on the enemy,” he said, while stressing that three vehicles were destroyed, while one vehicle, 27 motorcycles, ammunition, and light and heavy weapons were recovered.
“At least 15 terrorists perished in this operation,” stressed the Army, which has conveyed its “congratulations” to the soldiers who achieved these “appreciable results.” Lastly, he asked the Burkinabe forces “to maintain this dynamic, which makes the situation of the armed terrorist groups more and more difficult”.
The African country has generally experienced a significant increase in attacks since 2015, the work of both the Al Qaeda affiliate and the Islamic State affiliate in the region. These attacks have also contributed to an increase in inter-community violence and have caused self-defense groups to flourish.
