Bundestag Defense Commission calls for national conference on Ukraine

BERLIN, July 17. (DPA/EP) –

The Defense Commission of the German Parliament has asked Chancellor Olaf Scholz to convene a national conference on Ukraine, to improve the aid response to the kyiv authorities.

The letter, signed by the commission’s president, Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, of the Liberal Party (FDP), calls for a meeting to be held between German politicians, the Army, the arms industry and the unions to agree on greater aid. to Ukraine.

“While the Ukrainian Army bravely resists the brutal Russian attack, trying to keep the Russian Army at bay, with its own military successes and our humanitarian, economic and military support, Russia continues to prepare for major offensives,” reads the text.

“The goal should be to get an orderly overview so that we can initiate the next steps selectively, consensually and jointly,” he adds, adding that Ukraine’s resistance depends “on Germany’s support.”

Scholz was criticized in the early stages of the Russian invasion of Ukraine for merely sending items such as helmets and being slow to deliver weapons and significant aid.

Since then, German support has increased significantly. Strack-Zimmermann has been at the forefront of the push to ship heavy weapons. According to liberal policy, the country must “do even more to help Ukraine win this war.”

“Germany must assume the leading role in Europe demanded by Western partners and move forward decisively and courageously without any hesitation,” he said. The Liberal Party is part of the German government coalition together with the Social Democratic Party (SPD) of Chancellor Scholz and the Greens.
