The president of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, responded on Thursday to his Colombian counterpart, Gustavo Petro, that he “does not understand” the “obsession” with his country, after the Colombian president shared a tweet related to the investigation of prosecutors of New York on alleged pacts between Salvadoran government officials and gang members.
At first, in the morning, Petro shared a news d d , which indicates that “prosecutors in New York alleged that high-ranking Bukele officials made a pact with the gangs.” “In exchange for better terms, the gangs will lower the homicide rate to make it look like their tough approach to crime was working,” the article concludes.
Besides of Tweet From the North American media, the Colombian president wrote in his message that “better than making government pacts under the table is that Justice can make them on the table without deceit and in search of Peace.”
In this regard, the Salvadoran president reacted with a forceful message: “Agree. First he accuses of inhumane treatment and now they talk about ‘better conditions’.”
“Besides, I don’t understand your obsession with El Salvador. Isn’t your son the one who makes pacts under the table and also for money? Is everything okay at home?” Bukele added.
Given Bukele’s response, Petro manifested that “everything is fine” at home, since in Colombia, according to the president, “there is a presumption of innocence” and “neither judges nor magistrates are dismissed”, but rather there is a “struggle for a more autonomous and strong”.
“Here in Colombia we deepen, we do not destroy democracy,” adds the Colombian president’s tweet.
Barely half an hour later, Bukele questioned the observation of his peer about the “presumption of innocence” in Colombia. “I imagine that he has never accused any of his opponents. Colombians will know if that is true or another lie, that he already seems to be addicted to them,” added the Salvadoran president.
Likewise, he considered that Petro was the one who “attacked” again and assured that “he did not even remember his existence.”
Last week, the Colombian Attorney General’s Office announced that it had opened an investigation against the eldest son of President Petro, before the agent’s request to clarify rumors about alleged bribes to drug traffickers and prisoners, involving his son and brother, in exchange for concessions in the politics of total peace.
The clash between the two leadersbroke out in early Marchwhen the Colombian president said, in a government act, that the new prison in El Salvador, known as Terrorism Containment Center, is a “concentration camp that gives chills”, but that triggers “popularities”. Some statements that provoked the reaction of President Bukele, who said to Petro that “the results weigh more than the rhetoric”, through Twitter.
