The European Commission has announced this Monday that the donor conference to help in the recovery of the areas affected by the recent earthquake in Turkey and Syria will take place on March 16 in Brussels.

“The objective is to provide resources and coordinate the response to support the recovery and assistance in the affected areas in the two countries,” explained the spokesperson for the Community Executive Dana Spinant at a press conference.

The will to organize such an initiative to “mobilize funds worldwide” was already advanced by the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, in a message days after the earthquake that has left tens of thousands of deaths in the region, but the exact date of the appointment remained to be known.

All the countries of the European Union but also those of its neighbourhood, members of the United Nations, international institutions “and anyone who wants to support the efforts” for the recovery of the areas are summoned to the event, the community spokesperson pointed out. struck by the earthquake on February 6.

This same Monday, the Turkish authorities have again revised upwards the death toll from the catastrophe in the south of the country, near the border with Syria, and have reported that more than 41,100 people have lost their lives.

Thus, the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), under the Turkish Ministry of the Interior, has detailed that so far 41,156 deaths have been confirmed and more than 460,000 people have had to be evacuated from the ten provinces affected by the tremors. .
