BRUSSELS, September 5 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The European Commission announced on Thursday emergency humanitarian aid worth 1.1 million euros to respond to the consequences of the floods in recent weeks in Bangladesh that have left dozens dead and thousands affected.
These funds complement the distribution of hygiene and sanitary items, shelter and kitchen utensils from the emergency reserves financed by the EU.
“The floods in Bangladesh have had a devastating impact on affected communities. We are making EU funds available and have released contingency reserves that will help our humanitarian partners save lives during this emergency,” said Commissioner for Crisis Management Janez Lenarcic.
Floods caused by heavy rains have left at least 71 dead, according to the official tally of the authorities in the Asian country. The meteorological phenomenon, which affects more than 5 million people, has left some 582,000 families isolated in eleven districts of towns located mainly in Chattogram, in the southeast of Bangladesh.
In 2024, the EU has allocated more than 33 million euros for humanitarian aid to the country, an amount that will mainly go to the Cox’s Bazar refugee camp, the largest in the world and which houses the Roghinya population expelled from Burma. European aid to Dhaka also relates to the response to climate emergencies such as heat waves, cyclones and floods.
