Brussels proposes 1.8 billion plan for Moldova to accelerate economic convergence with the EU

BRUSSELS Oct. 10 () –

The European Commission proposed this Thursday an economic growth plan for Moldova, consisting of 1.8 billion in aid and loans, with which it aims to bring the candidate country closer to the European Union and increase economic convergence.

This aid is conditional on the reform agenda that Chisinau addresses, in accordance with European standards and in line with integrating the country into some mechanisms of the Single Market.

In this sense, the funds will support infrastructure projects, such as roads, bridges and railways, including the connection between Chisinau and Odessa, in Ukraine. Energy security projects, aid in the face of the energy crisis, reinforcement of the health system and technological support with broadband and roaming access will also be promoted.

Brussels seeks to bring Moldova closer to the benefits that the EU brings, such as the Single Market, as well as to accelerate economic convergence with the bloc, an element that the EU sees as essential to prepare the candidate countries for accession.

This model follows the growth plan proposed by the European Commission for the Balkan region, where the EU has planned a 6 billion program for the six countries that aspire to accession.
