BRUSSELS, September 6 () –
The European Commission announced on Friday that it will step up support for energy facilities in Ukraine in the face of the wave of Russian air strikes, with a budget of 40 million euros that will be mainly used to repair and secure electricity and heating systems for the winter.
Of the total amount allocated, 35 million euros will go to projects in Ukraine to repair damaged buildings, ensure electricity and heating and provide shelter for those most in need.
Moldova will receive an additional 5 million euros to care for Ukrainian refugees and provide them with protection and access to basic services, as well as to improve the preparation of shelters for the arrival of winter in the region.
The European aid comes in the midst of a wave of Russian air strikes against cities and critical infrastructure, a strategy that has been denounced by voices within the EU such as the High Representative for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, who has accused Russia of wanting to leave Ukrainian citizens in the dark and frozen.
For his part, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has reiterated his call to his international partners to strengthen military assistance to kyiv in order to “stop Russia’s air terror.”
