British ultranationalist Tommy Robinson's team announces he has been arrested under anti-terror law

Jul 28. () –

British ultranationalist Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, better known as ‘Tommy Robinson’, has been arrested by authorities under anti-terrorist legislation, his team has announced.

“We can confirm that ‘Tommy Robinson’ has been arrested by the Police in accordance with the powers granted to him by the Terrorism Act 2000,” reads a message posted on his verified account on social media site X on Sunday.

“You read that right. ‘Tommy’ has been arrested by the police under an anti-terrorism law,” the message added, which was also picked up by the British newspaper ‘Telegraph’.

The ultra-nationalist led a demonstration in central London last Saturday that ended with one counter-protester injured, according to the Metropolitan Police.

The Times reported that Robinson could be jailed after showing a banned film at Saturday’s so-called “patriotic rally” depicting a bullying incident at Almondbury Community School, where a Syrian refugee was assaulted in a playground.

In July 2021, Robinson, 41, was ordered to pay more than €100,000 plus court costs for defaming the 15-year-old refugee, and is likely to have breached a court order with the latest screening. He is due to appear in the High Court on Monday on the same charges. If convicted, he could face up to two years in prison.
