The Labor Party has suspended MP Mike Amesbury after security camera footage was published in which he can be seen punching a man in the street.
“MP Mike Amesbury is collaborating with Cheshire Police in the investigation following the incident on Friday night,” a party spokesperson explained, quoted by Sky News.
“Pending the investigation the Labor Party has decided to administratively suspend Mr Amesbury’s membership of the Labor Party,” he added.
In the video you can see the MP hitting a man, who falls to the ground and is then hit repeatedly by the Labor politician. Three people then approach and intervene.
Cheshire Police have said they have voluntarily taken a statement from a 55-year-old man in relation to the incident. “He has been released pending the investigation,” he indicated.
The Conservative Party has reacted by urging Amesbury to “answer for his actions”. “The right thing is that it be thoroughly investigated,” said a Tory spokesperson.
