British Islamist preacher sentenced to life in prison for fomenting attacks and spreading hate speech

Jul 30 () –

A court in the British capital, London, has sentenced well-known British Islamist preacher Anjem Choudary to life in prison for leading the illegal organisation Al Muhajirun (ALM), which is intended to foment attacks and spread messages of “hatred and division”.

Choudary, 57, who was born in London, will have to serve a minimum of 28 years in prison before being eligible for alternative treatment, according to information collected by the British news channel Sky News, which refers to a sentence from the Woolwich court in London.

The ruling follows a joint investigation by British police, New York security forces and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, which revealed that ALM had continued to operate and seek to recruit members despite being banned in the UK in 2006, when it was known by another name.

Choudary has already been convicted by the British courts. In 2016, he was sentenced to five years and six months in prison for having invited his followers to support the terrorist group Islamic State through his online speeches.

Known in Britain for his Islamist rhetoric, Choudary is also internationally recognised for his appearances on television in other countries in which he argues that Western policies targeting Muslims are to blame for attacks by Islamist militants.
