Albares reminds Netanyahu that the Spanish Consulate in Jerusalem operated “long before the existence of the State of Israel”

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, has responded to the Government of Benjamin Netanyahu, which threatened last week to close the Spanish Consulate in Jerusalem if it maintained its support for the Palestinian Authority. This Monday, the Spaniard recalled that this Consulate operated “long before the existence of the State of Israel” and that it has a “very particular status”, with a “historical status”.

Albares’ counterpart, Israel Katz, wrote on his X account that “any connection” between the Consulate and the Palestinian Authority “poses a threat to Israel’s national security and will be completely prohibited.”

Albares indicated in his meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Egypt, Sameh Shoukry, that the Spanish Government sent a verbal note to Israel in which they rejected “any obstruction to the normal work of that Consulate.”
