( Spanish) – Brazil recorded 7,322 fires between Thursday and Friday, according to data from the National Institute for Space Research of Brazil (Inpe) cited by the state-run Agencia Brasil.
In the span of those 48 hours, Brazil accounted for 71.9% of the forest fires recorded in South America. It is followed by Bolivia with 1,137 fires (11.2%), Peru with 842 (8.3%), Argentina with 433 (4.3%) and Paraguay with 271 (2.7%). In terms of percentage of fires, Brazil accounts for 50.6% of all fires recorded so far this year.
The most affected Brazilian state is Mato Grosso, with 1,379 fires in the last 48 hours, followed by Amazonas, with 1,205, Pará, with 1,001, and Acre, with 513 outbreaks. The Amazon region of Brazil is the most affected region: it concentrates 49% of the areas affected by fires in the country.
