MADRID 5 Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The new president of Botswana, Duma Boko, took office this Monday after elections marked the end of almost six decades of dominance by the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) and highlighted a peaceful transfer of power from his predecessor, Mokgweetsi Masisi .

“Today we have completed the administrative handover from my predecessor, Mokgweetsi Masisi, to me as the new president-elect. I am proud to serve a nation that has the greatest respect for democracy,” he expressed through his profile on the social network .

During the ceremony, Boko affirmed his commitment to the rule of law and praised Masisi for a “fluid” transition, showing his admiration and respect for the former president by considering that “it is not easy not only to accept defeat, but to peacefully hand over the power.” can”. “This is true democracy, and I am truly honored that President Masisi has held fast to democratic principles,” he said.

Masisi, who introduced Boko to the presidential office and public officials, said in a subsequent press conference that it is important to admit defeat because “it is a fact” that he lost the elections, according to the Botswana newspaper ‘Mmegi’.

It is worth mentioning that during the day Boko appointed his ‘number two’, Ndaba Gaolathe, as his vice president. Last week he won the parliamentary seat for Gaborone Bonnington North. “He has a way of calming me and everyone around him. He has the effect of serenity,” the president said when making the announcement.

The BDP, led by Masisi, has dominated Botswana politics since the country gained independence, although this time it went to the polls after years of tensions between Masisi and his predecessor in office, Ian Khama, and in the face of worsening of the economic situation due to the fall in the sale of diamonds, the main source of income for its economy.
