MADRID 3 Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The High Representative for Foreign Policy of the EU, Josep Borrell, visited this Sunday the demilitarized zone that serves as the border between South Korea and North Korea, from where he highlighted the need to “invest more in peace.”
“My visit today to the demilitarized zone between the Republic of Korea and the DPRK (Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, North Korea) is another reminder of the need to invest more in peace,” Borrell posted on his account on social network
Borrell has also highlighted the work of the United Nations Command and the Neutral Countries Supervision Commission, the international missions deployed on the armistice line, since both countries have technically remained at war since 1953.
The head of EU diplomacy has met in Seoul with the South Korean Foreign Minister, Cho Tae Yul, with whom he has discussed possible ways to increase cooperation in security and defense. Borrell also plans to meet with Defense Minister Kim Yong Hyun.
“In recent years we have gotten even closer and have made significant progress in the digital, green and health partnership,” Borrell highlighted in a previous message published on X. “I am here to elevate security and defense cooperation between Korea of the South and the EU to the next level,” he added.
South Korean media have pointed out that the talks would also address the recent sending of North Korean troops to Russia to participate in the war conflict in Ukraine and its response.
