BRUSSELS, June 21 () –
The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, has renewed the mandate of the EU special envoy for the Belgrade-Pristina Dialogue, Miroslav Lajcak, which was to expire this summer so that he can continue for a few months and finish his responsibility at same time that Borrell leaves office
The head of European diplomacy has made this decision to coincide his departure from office, at the end of the year, with the mandate of the envoy for the Dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina, explained a senior EU official, indicating that it is a logical step in view of the fact that this position has to have the confidence of the head of Foreign Affairs and in fact was created by Borrell at the end of 2019 when he assumed his position.
“The High Representative is the facilitator of the dialogue and his right-hand man is the envoy, so Borrell thinks that it should be his successor who appoints a new envoy,” said this senior official, who explains that Lajcak will see his term extended for a few months. mandate.
In the last renewal of European diplomatic positions piloted by Borrell last April, Lajcak was appointed as European ambassador to Switzerland. The former Foreign Minister of Slovakia was appointed to this new position in an attempt to revitalize the normalization process between Serbia and Kosovo, which after more than a decade has produced very limited results.
