From the summit of the European Political Community, he insists on the need to achieve peace in Ukraine without kyiv’s surrender
Jul 18 () –
The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, has regretted this Thursday the resolution approved by the Israeli Parliament (Knesset) rejecting the creation of the Palestinian State and has stressed that, if Israel does not support this solution, it must propose an alternative.
“If they don’t want the two-state solution, what do they want? What is the solution? If they reject this solution, they must propose another one. What are their plans for millions of Palestinians living in the occupied territories,” Borrell said upon his arrival in the British city of Woodstock to participate in the summit of the European Political Community.
Borrell also pointed out that if we want to build “a sustainable peace”, it is essential to provide a “solution and political horizon” for the Palestinian population by rejecting terrorism and guaranteeing security as dictated by United Nations resolutions for years.
The Knesset vote resulted in a large majority in favour of the resolution, which rejects the creation of a State of Palestine, even through negotiations, considering that it would pose an “existential danger” for the country and would “perpetuate” the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
The MPs justified their decision by their fear that Hamas would seize power in a future Palestinian state to turn it into a “base of radical Islamic terror” working in “coordination” with Iran to destroy Israel. In February, the Knesset also voted to reject “unilateral recognition” of the Palestinian state.
PEACE IN UKRAINE WITHOUT kyiv’S SURRENDER
On the other hand, the highest representative of EU diplomacy has pointed to the war in Ukraine, a conflict for which he is convinced that the leaders will join forces to achieve peace without leading to Ukraine’s surrender, according to a statement from the EU diplomatic service.
“We must continue to support Ukraine, and I am sure that the leaders (of the European Political Community) will discuss how to do so in order to achieve peace. But not just any kind of peace, not a peace that comes from Ukraine’s surrender, a peace based on international law and that respects Ukraine’s territorial integrity,” he added.
