Borrell holds his first phone call with the acting Foreign Minister of Iran

June 13. () –

The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, held his first telephone call this Wednesday with the acting Foreign Minister of Iran, Ali Bagheri, in which they spoke about the Iranian nuclear program and other issues.

“First call with Bagheri. We have had candid exchanges, among other things on issues relating to the Iranian nuclear programme, the war in Gaza and tensions on the border between Israel and Lebanon. I have also called for the release of detained EU citizens” , has published on his social network account X.

For his part, the acting minister has also assured that they have had an “honest and forward-looking conversation” regarding bilateral relations.

Among the issues mentioned by Bagheri are the withdrawal of EU sanctions against Iran and the “catastrophic situation in Palestine”, although he did not give further details on the matter.

This is the first call that both diplomatic heads have had since the death of Bagheri’s predecessor, Hosein Amirabdolahian, who died on May 19 in a helicopter accident along with the president of Iran, Ebrahim Raisi, and the rest of the occupants of the crashed aircraft. Bagheri had until then served as deputy foreign minister and as the main person in charge of the nuclear negotiating team.

This replacement is temporary until new presidential elections are held, scheduled for June 28, and the reconfiguration of a new Government.
