Borrell expresses support for proposed 'roadmap' for Gaza ceasefire and hostage release

May 31. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, has expressed his support for the ‘road map’ detailed by the president of the United States, Joe Biden, and proposed by Israel for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip , as well as for the release of hostages held by the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) in the Palestinian enclave.

“Our full support for Biden’s roadmap for a lasting ceasefire and the release of hostages leading to a permanent cessation of hostilities and the withdrawal of the Israel Defense Forces and the beginning of reconstruction efforts” , he pointed out on the social network X.

His words come after Biden has explained in detail a ‘road map’ proposed by Israel with three phases for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and the release of hostages held by Palestinian militias since last October 7 .

Biden has stressed that Qatar has transmitted this proposal to Hamas. The first phase will last six weeks and will include a ceasefire with the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the most populated areas of Gaza and the release of some of the hostages, including women and elderly people, in exchange for the release of Palestinian prisoners.

In this first phase, the American hostages will be released and the bodies of those who died during the militia attacks will be returned to their families. Biden has also explained that Palestinians will return to their homes in neighborhoods throughout Gaza, including the north. The ceasefire will allow the entry of 600 trucks with humanitarian aid for the Gazan population.

The president has explained that phase two includes the release of all remaining living hostages, including military personnel, and the Israeli Army will withdraw from the Gaza Strip, controlled by Hamas. Finally, the third part of this ‘roadmap’ contemplates “an important reconstruction plan for Gaza.”
