The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, congratulated this Tuesday the Maltese member of the European People’s Party (EPP) Roberta Metsola on her re-election to the head of the European Parliament, after having obtained the support of 90.2 percent of the votes in the plenary session held in Strasbourg (France).
“I look forward to continuing to cooperate with you and the European Parliament, a staunch supporter of the European Union’s foreign policy and its instruments, including our election observation missions,” Borrell said on his social media profile X.
With a majority of 562 votes out of the 623 valid votes cast in the first round of voting, the conservative has beaten the alternative candidate presented the day before by the European Left, Podemos MEP Irene Montero, who obtained 61 votes, fifteen more than the support of her own group would have guaranteed her.
Although the vote was secret, the result suggests that she has not only had the support of the so-called centre coalition between the EPP, the Socialists and Democrats (S&D) and the liberals (Renew Europe, RE) to share out the top EU posts, but has also garnered numerous votes from the far right and part of the Greens.
The 10th legislative session begins with a more fragmented Parliament than in the past and with an increase in the far right, which has resulted in the formation of three groups of this movement. 54% of MEPs occupy a seat in the European Parliament for the first time and 39% of the Parliament is occupied by women.
