EU High Representative for Foreign Policy Josep Borrell has called for an independent international investigation into the deaths of at least 12 Israelis in the Druze town of Majdal Shams in the Israeli-occupied Syrian Golan Heights, which Israeli authorities attribute to the Lebanese militia-party Hezbollah.
“We need an independent international investigation into this unacceptable incident. I urge all parties to exercise maximum restraint and avoid further escalation,” he said in a message posted on X.
Borrell has condemned these deaths, which he has described as a “bloodbath” and has referred to the “shocking images from the football pitch” of Majdal Shams.
Israel has claimed that the deaths were caused by a Falaq-1 rocket launched from Lebanon by Hezbollah. However, the Lebanese militia has denied any involvement and has pointed to the fall of an Israeli anti-aircraft interceptor missile as the cause.
