Borrell asks to "end the violence" and "start a process of political solution" in Burma

BRUSSELS, Aug. 5 () –

The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, calls for an “end to violence” and “initiate a process of political solution” in Burma after the recent executions of four activists for democracy in the country .

“Our priorities are to put an end to the violence, resume a process of political solution and improve the provision of humanitarian assistance,” said the head of European diplomacy in his speech at the twenty-ninth regional forum of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Borrell has pointed out that the executions of four democracy activists “are a shocking signal to the world” of the military junta’s “contempt” “for the lives and rights of citizens” as well as for “its desire for freedom”.

The High Representative has also pointed out the EU’s concern about the “lack of progress” in the implementation of the so-called “five points of Consensus”, the democratic transition roadmap drawn up by ASEAN itself, after which he has shown their support for the latter organization to find a “peaceful and inclusive” solution to the conflict.

On the other hand, Borrell has warned that the “launch of ballistic missiles” by North Korea “violates” the resolutions of the UN Security Council and endangers “regional and international peace and security.”

“Pyongyang must stop its destabilizing actions and resume dialogue with key partners,” said the head of European diplomacy.

In a further step, the High Representative has called on North Korea to adhere to UN Security Council resolutions to “prevent the flow of funding, components or knowledge” that could fuel “illegal weapons development.”

In addition, Borrell has valued the approval, this Friday, of “two declarations on peace, stability and prosperity and on the preservation of the nuclear-weapon-free zone in Southeast Asia.”
