The top diplomat of the European Union (EU), Josep Borrell, congratulated the United States this Saturday for completing the process of destroying its arsenal of chemical weapons “before the scheduled date of September and in a way that is safe for the environment atmosphere”.
Likewise, the EU also applauds the “professional work” of the experts of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) when verifying the procedure.
“This destruction marks an important milestone in the implementation of the Convention against the Use of Chemical Weapons, 25 years after its entry into force, as a key element of the international architecture of non-proliferation and disarmament initiatives,” adds Borrell.
The High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy concluded his statement by reiterating that the European Union will continue with its “forceful political and financial support” to guarantee the application of the agreement and prevent the reappearance of this type of weapon.
In this sense, Borrell recalls that the EU foreign ministers, during their last meeting on June 26, approved a new financial contribution “of a voluntary nature” and worth 5.3 million euros to support the activities of the OPCW until 2026.
