Borrell and the Ukrainian Foreign Minister discuss EU efforts to send Patriot missiles to Ukraine

April 11 () –

The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, and the Foreign Minister of Ukraine, Dimitro Kuleba, spoke this Wednesday about the EU's efforts to send Patriot missiles to kyiv to reinforce its air defense systems in the face of shortage of ammunition due to lack of American aid.

“I have called him (Borrell) to review the progress made over the past week in fulfilling President Zelensky's request to deliver additional Patriot systems to Ukraine. The High Representative has informed me of the steps taken by the EU. I thank you for all your active efforts. (…) Patriot diplomacy is in full swing,” Kuleba explained in a message published on his account on the social network X, formerly Twitter.

For his part, Borrell has confirmed the conversations, and has explained his conversations with the rest of the EU member countries to deliver the necessary equipment to Ukraine.

“I am contacting EU Member States to urge them to identify the available equipment that Ukraine needs. At the next joint meeting of EU foreign and defense ministers on April 22, we must reach tangible commitments and actions. Ukraine “can't wait,” Borrell said in X.

In addition, the two diplomatic heads have discussed the shipment of artillery ammunition, of which the Ukrainian Army is also experiencing a shortage, as well as other types of projectiles.

Over the past few weeks, the Ukrainian Armed Forces have experienced low levels of some types of ammunition as a result of the lack of US aid, whose approval is blocked in Congress by budget disputes between Democrats and Republicans, and which has led to the loss of some localities in favor of Russia.
