BRUSSELS, Jan. 17 () –
The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, assured this Tuesday that the joint aid to Ukraine from the European institutions and the member states of the bloc is close to 50,000 million euros, which makes Europe the kyiv’s main support against Russian aggression over the United States.
“It is Europe’s honor to help Ukraine defend itself against the aggression it is suffering. I have put a lot of effort into making this possible, building unity around decisions that have allowed Ukraine to resist,” said the head of European diplomacy in a debate at the plenary session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
As Borrell has detailed, the total sum of military, financial and humanitarian aid is close to 50,000 million euros. “This puts us in first place among countries in terms of the amount of aid provided to Ukraine, above the United States,” he stressed before MEPs.
In any case, he has insisted that this aid “is not enough” as long as Ukraine continues to suffer the systematic attack of the Russian Army, which he has accused of trying to destroy the neighboring country. “We will have to support Ukraine, and not only militarily. The door will have to be open to negotiations, but to make peace you need two and for war you only need one,” he lamented.
The head of European diplomacy has concluded by defending that the EU, apart from being a commercial power and bulwark of Human Rights, must be able to use “hard power” when necessary and have the capacity to influence the international scene. “Unfortunately not everyone thinks the same as us and some prefer force to the norm. Given this we have to have the ability to respond,” he has settled.
