The former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has made a surprise visit to Ukraine this Sunday and has met with the Ukrainian President, Volodimir Zelenski, who has conveyed that it is a privilege to be able to be there and show his solidarity with the country.
Johnson has been photographed in the town of Borodianka, in the kyiv region, where he has traveled after being invited by Zelenski himself. He has also visited Bucha, where Russian troops reportedly committed war crimes.
“It is a privilege to visit Ukraine invited by President Zelenski. The suffering of the Ukrainian people has lasted too long,” he said.
“The only way to end this war is for Ukraine to win and for Ukraine to win as quickly as possible. It is time to double down and give the Ukrainians the tools they need to finish the job,” he added. “The sooner Putin fails, the better for Ukraine and for the whole world,” she stressed, according to the British newspaper ‘The Guardian’.
A Johnson spokesman added that he fully supports the British government in its Ukraine policy, including the recent decision to send Challenger 2 main battle tanks. In addition, this visit demonstrates solidarity with the Ukrainian people.
The British government has expressed its support for Johnson’s move to Ukraine. “The UK stands with Ukraine and will continue to support them,” a spokesman for Prime Minister Rishi Sunak explained.
For his part, Zelensky has stressed the need for NATO to embrace Ukraine in order to protect itself from Russia. “It is the best guarantee of security” for Ukraine, the Ukrainian president has defended during his meeting with Johnson, according to what the presidential spokesman Andrii Yermak has reported.
Zelensky and Johnson have also discussed the possibility of a peace conference that Ukraine is proposing and for which it sets forth two conditions that Russia must meet: security guarantees and the withdrawal of Russian troops from all Ukrainian territory.
