Bolsonaro agrees to abide by the Constitution after defeat

In a brief two-minute speech, the current president of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, sheepishly acknowledged the result of the presidential elections and promised to comply with the country’s Constitution. The transition of power with Lula da Silva’s team begins this Thursday, said his chief of staff Ciro Nogueira. Bolsonaro obtained 49.1% of the votes, just two million votes difference with Lula.

Jair Bolsonaro has taken two days to speak publicly, since the victory of Lula da Silva was announced in the second round of the presidential elections.

His speech lasted just two minutes. In a serious tone he began by referring to the demonstrations of his supporters, including truckers blocking various routes. Yes ok, he did not directly say that he disagreed with the resultshe did mention that those popular movements are due to feeling of injustice for him electoral process. Bolsonaro called on the protesters to continue but peacefully, after the Brazilian Justice ordered that the blockades be lifted.

“The current popular movements are the result of indignation and the feeling of injustice of how the electoral process took place. Peaceful demonstrations will always be welcome. Our dreams are more alive than ever. We are in favor of order and progress. As president of the Republic and citizen will continue to comply with all the commandments of the Constitution”

Bolsonaro thanked the 58 million Brazilians who voted for him, and despite not explicitly admit defeatauthorized his chief of staff and coordinator of the electoral campaign, Ciro Nogueira, to begin the transition with the government of Lula’s Workers’ Party (PT).

“President Jair Bolsonaro authorized me to start, based on the law, the transition process with Lula da Silva,” said Ciro Nogueira.

During the campaign, Bolsonaro did not stop sowing doubts about whether or not he would admit an eventual defeat. Today, he reluctantly dispelled the doubts, before a country more divided than ever and with a part of his supporters willing to continue demonstrating against his defeat.
