Bolivian president seeks to strengthen ties with Venezuela

Bolivian President Luis Arce arrived in Caracas on Thursday with the purpose of signing, together with Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, a series of cooperation agreements that aim to further strengthen the close ties between the two nations.

Arce was received by Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yván Gil at the Simón Bolívar international airport, north of Caracas.

The Bolivian ruler’s busy schedule includes meetings with senior Venezuelan officials and a meeting with Maduro, with whom he will sign a joint declaration on the agreements of the working groups held since the day before in the framework of the III bilateral Mixed Commission, reported the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry .

In Venezuela, “we will consolidate important mutual cooperation agreements for the benefit of both peoples,” Arce wrote shortly before his departure on his Twitter account.

Since his government began in November 2020, Arce -political heir to former President Evo Morales-, resumed relations with Venezuela after his predecessor Jeanine Áñez broke them in November 2019three days after the then vice president of the Senate proclaimed herself president of Bolivia after the resignation of Morales.

Morales, his then vice president and other senior officials resigned after a social unrest that left 37 dead in nearly a month of street protests after an election that observers from the Organization of American States (OAS) considered fraudulent.
