The president of the Popular Party, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, has stated this morning that the PSOE had to give in during the negotiations for the renewal of the General Council of the Judiciary in response to the demands of Brussels. “The PSOE has had to accept the agreement of the Judiciary because the European Commission warned Spain that it was going to issue a harsh report in July against the invasive practices of the Government in the area of justice,” he stated during an interview for The confidential.
However, the Minister for the Presidency, Justice and Relations with the Courts, Félix Bolaños, has denied the words of the popular leader. “It is completely false that the European Commission warned Spain of anything and the PP knows it,” he said in a message on the social network X. Bolaños, negotiator of the Government with the PP for the renewal of the governing body of the judges with the mediation of the European Commission, has clarified that Brussels’ only concern was not reaching an agreement. “Its concern was the non-renewal of the CGPJ.”
He PSOE and the PP closed an agreement for the renewal of the Judiciary on Tuesday, June 25, after almost six years with the mandate expired. The pact – the same one that the popular party already rejected in 2022 – includes 10 members proposed by each party, measures against the revolving doors between politics and Justice and the commission for the new CGPJ of a proposal on the election of members.
In an interview for The country, the minister denies a shift towards bipartisanship after reaching the pact with the PP, but has assured that the agreements between both parties regarding what the Constitution requires “is very positive” for the country. “The Government is in coalition with Sumar and the PP is in the opposition, and that will continue like this. We are a progressive Government and we are going to continue making progressive policies,” he stated in this regard. “This agreement reduces the toxic climate and gives depth to the legislature,” he stressed.
The leader of the PP, for his part, has described this collaboration as a “mirage” and maintains his distrust of the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, against whom he has lashed out after his wife was summoned as a suspect in an alleged influence peddling scheme. “If my wife were sitting in the dock for corruption, I would have resigned,” he said in the interview for El Confidencial.
Feijóo has also accused Sánchez of “authoritarian tendencies” that would not allow new agreements to renew the organs of the State, and has insisted that he has become the “owner” of the PSOE.
The Minister of Education, FP and Sports, Pilar Alegría, also responds to these statements, who has criticized that the president of the PP “does not know what he is saying or does not understand what he has signed” in the text for the renewal of the CGPJ. “When he makes statements of this type, after closing an agreement, he conveys an absolute lack of leadership. And, above all, one wonders: either you don’t know what he is saying or you don’t understand what your own party signed a few hours ago,” Alegría said in an interview for this medium.
The minister, spokesperson for the Government, has also once again highlighted the agreement between both parties: “If for once the Popular Party has decided to get out of that groundhog dream and take this step to return to the Constitution and constitutionality, Well, welcome.”
