September 2 () –
The Minister of Economy, Trade and Business, Carlos Cuerpo, announced on Monday that the new governor of the Bank of Spain will be a person with training, experience and a resume “more than suitable, in line and at the level of the previous governor, or even above if that is possible.”
“A point of confidence that the institution will be in very good hands,” said the Minister of Economy in an interview on the program ‘Todo es mentira’, on Cuatro, reported by Europa Press.
The Minister of Economy, Trade and Business has asked to appear before the Congress of Deputies on Wednesday to report on the candidate proposed by the Executive for Governor of the Bank of Spain, replacing Pablo Hernández de Cos.
“Out of institutional respect,” the body has insisted on waiting until the name of the new governor is presented on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m.
However, the minister has announced that the person who replaces Pablo Hernández de Cos, “who was an excellent governor”, will be a person with training, experience and a more than suitable CV, in line with and at the level of the previous governor, “or even above if that is possible.”
Government sources have assured Europa Press that the Executive is still negotiating with the PP the renewal of the top management of the Bank of Spain. Although it is an unwritten agreement, it is usual for the renewal of the positions of governor and deputy governor to be agreed between the PSOE and the PP, in such a way that the party in government appoints the governor and the opposition party proposes the deputy governor.
Last July, the Government proposed to the PP the name of the current Minister of Digital Transformation and the Civil Service, José Luis Escrivá, as Governor of the Bank of Spain to replace Pablo Hernández de Cos. Escrivá’s proposal was rejected by the PP because it came from the Executive itself.
Thus, while waiting to hear the Government’s proposal, the PP assures that if the person proposed meets these requirements of independence, there will be negotiations. However, Bravo has warned that if the person he proposes continues to be José Luis Escrivá, there will be no negotiations.
The Bank of Spain has been without a governor since June, when Hernández de Cos concluded his term. Margarita Delgado is now in charge of the institution’s interim governance, but her term ends on September 11.
The appointment of the new governor of the Bank of Spain does not have to be approved by the Council of Ministers, as it is made at the proposal of the President of the Government, and therefore only needs to be published in the Official State Gazette.
