El Salvador completed on Sunday the repatriation process of seven of its citizens who died in the fire at an immigration detention center in Ciudad Juárez, in northern Mexico, on March 27, and reiterated its demand that an investigation be carried out. comprehensive account of that tragedy.
“Our country seeks clarification of the facts, for which we have held key meetings to make our position known” to the State of Mexico, the Vice Minister of Diaspora and Human Mobility, Cindy Portal, said at a press conference.
The official pointed out that the bodies of the Salvadorans had been delivered to their relatives in the departments of Sonsonate, Chalatenango, La Libertad and San Salvador.
He explained that the Mexican government was responsible for land repatriation expenses, as well as the transportation and lodging expenses of the relatives who traveled to that country to identify the bodies.
Out of respect for the relatives, he added, the names of the victims were not given, although he pointed out that they are seven men with an age range between 35 and 40 years. The Mexican authorities published the names of 12 of the more than three dozen dead in the accident.
The vice minister said that at first there was talk of 12 Salvadorans dead, but after investigations it was confirmed that there were only seven. Five others were affected, two of them are in serious condition, and the rest were discharged and continued on their way to the United States.
“We are demanding that those guilty of this crime be able to pay with jail,” Portal stressed. “We are also demanding the resignation of the people who are responsible for immigration policy in Mexico.”
The official pointed out that “this is not the first case where El Salvador is demanding a response.”
“There are many cases that have gone unpunished and in which we are requesting compensation for damages.”
He recalled the case of 14 Salvadorans who were murdered in the state of Tamaulipas in 2010 and the crime of the Salvadoran Victoria Salazar a little over two years ago in the city of Tulum, Quintana Roo, in which, according to what he pointed out, several police officers had participated. .
