Boat with 30 bodies found off Senegal coast

September 23 (EUROPA PRESS) –

Senegalese authorities have discovered a boat with around 30 bodies off the coast of the African country, believed to be migrants who had set off from somewhere in West Africa.

The Senegalese Navy received an initial alert on Sunday about a boat with possible bodies lying about 70 kilometres from the capital, Dakar. A patrol boat proceeded to tow it and the boat finally arrived on the coast early Monday morning, according to the official APS news agency.

The authorities have opened an investigation to determine, among other things, where the migrants had set out from and how long they might have been adrift. Initial examinations have confirmed that the bodies are in an “advanced state of decomposition.”

This incident follows the sinking of another boat on September 8, after which the Navy recovered the bodies of 39 migrants. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has recorded more than 400 deaths off the west coast of Africa, a key route for transit to the Canary Islands.
