The Bluetooth SIG, the body responsible for defining and developing the Bluetooth communication standard and its associated technologies, has introduced the latest feature for locating devices. The technology, dubbed as Bluetooth Channel Sounding, will allow Bluetooth enabled devices to be able to be aware of the distance at which they are located from other Bluetooth devices.

The functions that this technology will involve will be various, from similar search systems to those of the “Smart Tags” from manufacturers such as Apple or Samsung, but making them practically any device with Bluetooth is compatible, digital keys for homes or vehicles, enabling/disabling devices depending on how far away they are from others, or improving connection performance by distributing connections based on distance.

The Bluetooth SIG ensures that the technology will be able to achieve very high precisions, in the order of centimeters over long distances. All this with a multi-layer security system to prevent attacks that compromise the security of the system.

And all this with the great expansion that Bluetooth has, present in practically any mobile device or that has wireless technology. All this means that it is not necessary to develop a new technology.
